Transport OTU Test Track In 1958 when motorways first opened many car engines blew up as motorists drove them at high speed for the first time. Most cars did not handle well at speed and the brakes were not much use either, fading rapidly when applied at 70 mph. The motor industry formed M.I.R.A. and constructed a proper track to test cars properly (at last). Fenny Drayton was selected because it was central and on the A5.

A X2SX Stoney Cross -- N 50 54 52 W 001 39 13 1942 RAF. 116 Wing. Transport Parkland The runway layout is still visible although the main runway is now a road that takes you from A31 into the New Forest. The width has been reduced to standard road dimensions by the use of piles of earth that has now been covered in grass. You can still the original runway width, however. The disposal points are still in place and the foundations of the various buildings are visible. There is also a large pond close to the road (runway) and I assume it is a bomb crater as it is circular and very large. Stoney Cross is now used as a caravan park for tourists! The RAF Water Tower is still in use and is painted in camo green.
